I installed a new Alpine unit in my ’94 CSE and wanted to “upgrade” the sound. I got the $200 Infinity 6x9 speakers for the back and $120 JBL’s 4” for the front. However I installed them only on the driver’s side and left the stock SAAB speakers on the other side. Now I could compare them by changing the balance left to right and back.
The stock SAAB 6x9 sounded better than the Infinities and the JBL were about the same. My conclusion is that the original SAAB speakers are pretty good. The only problem is the 1” cheap tweeters in the front. I replaced them with Clarion 1” dome silk tweeters. The sound is now unbelievably rich and crisp. My recommendation is to leave the original speakers and just change the front tweeters to good quality 1” silk or Titanium units.
BTW the Clarion tweeters don’t fit exactly in the holes and you need to slightly modify the connection. The only other worthwhile addition would be to add an 8”-10” subwoofer, if you like a lot of bass (the stock SAAB rear speakers are very good in the low frequency as is).
