but spinning the turbo without any oil film (the axle floats on a film of oil which is continuously supplied by the engine oil pump) WILL certainly damage the bearings. Years ago when I used to rebuild turbos, I made my employer very happy by doing that very thing (spinning the turbo wheel) to a rebuilt turbo. I then had to open it back up to inspect it and sure enough the bearings had spun even though the thing was drenched in oil. I had to replace the bearings at my cost (ouch). Lesson learned. Sure, you can turn it to check for play, but spinning it excessively will damage it. Read the precautions the next time you buy a turbo... it's on there as well.
