When it comes to noises, I take a couple of feet of hose - like old garden hose or some 1" heater hose, and hold one end to my ear while I (CAREFULLY!) move the other around the engine compartment. It does a pretty good job of isolating sounds.
As to belt tension - the manual says that when you press on the top of the belt (between the top pulleys) in the middle of the span, it should move about 1/4 inch under moderate pressure. Now, I've never been able to figure out what moderate is? For a slight 8 year old girl, or an Olympic weight lifter? I press with what I figure is about 5 to 10 pounds of pressure (from my calibrated thumb) and look for about 1/4 inch of play. That works out to be a pretty tight belt. So far, I haven't seen any premature wear in the bearings this way, and I'd rather have a tight belt than a loose one.
