I just finished replacing the starter on my ’94 CSE, auto, not-turbo. I had to remove the manifold, but then removing the starter was very easy. Trying to do it with the manifold in place does not leave you space to work on the inner 17mm nut. The other bolt (18mm) that holds the starter can be accessed directly from above by pushing aside the heater hoses that go to the firewall. At least remove the upper part of the U shaped manifold. Some tips:
1. Before you start working spray WD-40 on all bolts and nuts you see that you may have to remove and leave overnight to soak. (especially the 2 big ones holding the starter)
2. Use 1/2” drive long breaker bar to loosen the 17” and 18” bolts on the starter. I could not do it with 3/8” drive.
3. Wear gardening type gloves to protect your hand. The sockets can easily slip off and there are a lot of sharp edges around the engine compartment.
4. Try to replace the solenoid first. Most of the times it’s the solenoid that goes first. It’s also cheap (got mine for $30). It is held by three #2 Philips screws that are accessible without removing the manifold.
5. If you are up to it, overhaul the starter yourself. I took the starter out, cleaned and lubricated the gears and replaced just the brushes. It runs like new.
6. If it’s of help, I took photos while removing the starter, e-mail me if you want the pictures.
