power down so it can be used. Then of course there is handling, which the muscle cars never had.
Rather than look at HP and torque measurements, look at acceleration times. The Aero and even a CSE is quite respectable compared to a lot of Muscle Cars of the 60s and 70s. I can remember easily beating some Camaros and Firebirds with a VW Scirocco--not on acceleration but on a road with a few corners, and routinely on autocross courses. Their owners weren't pleased.
Then you have a couple of street cars from the mid to late 60s that were closer to race cars, like the AC Cobra, that would do 0-100 in about 8 or 9 seconds.
There's a replica company making those today and its cars duplicate or even exceeds the original car in performance (Factory Five Racing). And they handle. These will smoke Saabs and most other fast cars.
But yours is an interesting question. And yeah, you get a lot more power per cubic inch (or cc) out of a modern Saab motor than a big old V8 from the Muscle Car era.
Speed is good. How fast do you want to go?
