I have to agree with turbo on the importance
of good habits with your autobox. You can't
expect your tranny to last if you abuse it
or ignore proper care.
My squawk problem was more pronounced than
Mr Null's though. I wasn't worried about
the 1st gear whine, but I developed a very
noticable squawk at the 1/2 shift - sort of
sounded like a mini tire squeal. I had my
transmission checked and all was fine except a
recommendation that I change my accumulator
spring.
I then contacted Eriksson's about this problem,
and received the recommendation about the Lubegard
Red - it was extremely significant to me that this
product is the ONLY additive that Saab approves for
use in the ZF transmission and that they recommended it for
precisely the problem I had, and I was pleased that it
worked on the squawk, and it reduced the 1st gear whine.
I am very wary of miricle cures also - I don't buy into
the Bar's theory for radiator additives (too many stories of deposit problems) and I would never dream of using an oil additive.
The only other additive I use is an occaisional application of
Seafoam for fuel system cleaning (I've used that stuff for years,
and found that it was the only gas additive that actually
made a difference in my injector performance), although
in a recent discussion I have been made aware of a three stage
3M product that was highly recommended.
I have 138000 on my original automatic transmission and
like turbo I try to be very careful with it. They are
a sensitive item - and expensive to replace. I want mine to last.
Your use of additives is of course a personal decision,
but if you decide to try one, I think it is important to stick
to those that Saab approves.
