The AMM is the main control of fuel flow to the engine. The AMM measures air mass, and the ECU uses that to schedule fuel. If the AMM is 'pessimistic' on reading air mass, the ECU could be scheduling too little fuel. Running lean will cause knock, and the APC system will cut back on boost.
However, you need to be clearer on what 'not functioning properly' is. Usually that's the inability to reach full boost.
The real question is, what problems are you seeing?
