How can I protect myself against those SUVs?

Hey everyone,
I have a 1990 9000S 2.3, and Generally, I feel very safe and secure in it. It handles very well in all kinds of weather, and its solid structure and other safety features give me some peace of mind. We all know that the 9000 is a pretty safe car, but I've had one concern... I've read about crash "incompatibility", between cars and SUVs; in side-impacts especially.
In most cases of side-impact tests (like the ones the IIHS does, at http://www.hwysafety.org) the "injuries" come from the fact that the dummy's head leans out the window and is struck by the moving barrier. The moving barrier is designed to simulate a pickup truck or 4x4. Cars with inflatable head protection generally fare much better, often letting the dummies escape "injury".
Well, my issue is that it would be nice if I could afford a brand-new car with head protection, but I drive a 14-year old Saab for a reason. I'd like to be safe from all those maniacs who drive 4x4s and yack on their cell phones, but I'm not sure how to do it. I'd rather not have to wear a helmet all the time...
What are your ideas or suggestions? Be creative!
cheers!
