I noticed the same thing about the screen on the new pump. Old one from my '97 didn't have one(or it stayed in the tank when I removed the old pump). As far as wheezing, I would just check the connections again also pvc orientation. As far as I know, the pump supplies a continuous pressure no matter how much of the fuel is being used. So going more than half throttle is just returning less fuel to the tank. The line on my pump was pretty much dead on. I remember it was pointing at 2o'clock and I had to turn it clockwise and hold it as I thightened it down.
