First I agree with Gary. There are people on the board that knows way more than me about certain things.
Noise from the belt area can be a tough one for a mechanic, especially the ones that likes to throw parts at a car as fast as possible.
The immediate guess is usually belt tensioner and pulleys and you sell that to the customer and throws them on just to discover that the noise is still there.
Then you take your stethoscope and start to listen for the noise and discover that the alternator and/or water pump is noisy, and sell that to the customer just to discover that the noise is still there.
Last on the list is usually the power steering pump since they last "almost forever".
That's why you can get nailed by a bad pump because it happens so seldom, and a bad P/S pump transfer the noise into the alternator.
When you free spin an alternator or water pump you can usually still hear a bad bearing even without putting any side load onto the pulley.
A power steering pump is better to hide the noise.
Without doing my own testing I can't say for sure, but I have seen bad P/S pumps a few times so it might very well be that in your case.
