Saab 900 and 9000 use anywhere from 23-40 millimeters off-set stock and given that 900 and 9000 steering components are similar, I do not think that the offset is vital as long as it is not taken much out of these limits. Wide tires also prevent the wheels from torquing over and causing mechanical damage to parts. Face it, if a wheel stands up on its own off the car, it can't cause a torque to damage parts when it is on the car. Obviously if you had a narrow tire and used a two inch wide spacer, you would cause high forces on suspension parts. However, one problem with wide tires is that when you ride on uneven roads they tend to wonder. I saw somebody say that the width from hub to hub is the same in the front and back but is the body the same width from outer wheel well to outer wheel well on the front and back?
