My rear and middle mufflers parted company at the joint going into the rear one, although the rear muff was still pretty much okay. I wound up going with stock OEM equivalents (Starla) from eEuroparts. I did the system aft of the cat for about $375. I couldn't see enough of an advantage for the extra bucks (about $600 or so vs $375) in going to a 3" system, unless I did the JT 3" downpipe as well and it wasn't in the current budget, especially if I went to a 3" cat as well (even more $$). There's various discussion on this topic on this board, but it seems to me that unless you have a complete 3" system from the turbo to the tailpipe you won't gain a lot of performance advantages. Even then, judging from other posts, it seems to be more in a little livelier feel and faster turbo spin up than in real HP gains. But others with more knowlege or experience than I will likely disagree.

However, I notice that if you look at the chart on Maptun's site about the HP gains from their re-mapped ECUs, a stock exhaust is good for about 235 HP, while a 3" system (turbo back) is good for about 5-7 HP more, IIRC. With a stock ECU the gain with a 3" system would probably be a bit less, IMHO.

The other issue for me was how loud an aftermarket system might be. I do a lot of 4 to 7 hour road trips on business and I didn't want something that was noisy, plus a louder system would probably bug my wife, who also drives the car occasionally. Not sure which would be worse to deal with! ;o)

Good luck deciding.

Noel
