It will be messy, and there will be a loss of brake fluid. You can buy a cheap turkey basting tube and suck as much of the brake fluid as possible out of the brake fluid reservoir before you start - this will help cut down on the amount of fluid you'll spill. Have lots of rags handy, and invest in a few can of brake parts cleaner before you start the job. Brake fluid, if left in contact with painted surfaces too long, will corrode the paint. Personally, I've invested in the pressure bleeder available at eEuroparts.com (about $45); it has been a huge help, and is a good piece of equipment (Motive Products, I believe) - you can bleed the brakes and clutch by yourself if you have one.
