Took the timing chain cover off of the 94 cde engine on the stand. Something I found previously unknown to me. But many of you probably already have.
At No. 1 piston TDC, I knew the Woodruff key on the crankshaft is at 12 o'clock relative to the engine. I also knew there is a mark on each camshaft at the first hold-down on the shaft near each chain sprocket. And the mark matches the same on the hold-down. What I didn't know was at No. 1 piston TDC, there is another mark on each chain sprocket on the camshaft. Both marks are at 12 o'clock.
The timing and balance chain guides are worn more than I am willing to leave them alone at 142k miles. So I am going to replace them. Both chains look good so I won't touch them. The sprockets on the crank are also very good.
The bargain turns out to be less and less so when you start sinking money into it but I am very much committed.
