The idea is to turn the engine backwards a couple of turns. The chain tensioner extends in steps, and if you're on the edge of the tensioner extending a step, turning the engine backwards will trip it over. No risk.
If you have a manual tranny, just put the car in 5th, and on level ground, push the car backwards. You may have to rock it a little.
the other way, manual or tranny, is to stick a wrench on the main pulley. You may even be able to stick a wrench on the alternator pulley bolt, and that'll turn the engine. If you remove the spark plugs, it'll be very easy.
