Fold down the rear seats, grab a flashlight, flat blade screwdriver, and some torx drivers.
Where the fabric panel ends just below the rear window, you'll see 6 or so black plastic disks. Turn each 1/4 turn, and pull them out. At the bottom of the hatch you'll see the grab handle to pull the hatch closed. Remove the two torx screws. The panel is still held in place near the bottom by snap fasteners. Grap one edge of the fabric panel near the bottom, and pull straight towards you. You'll pop out the fasteners, and the panel will be loose. You'll still need to free it up near the top, but all it takes is some wiggling.
There is a rod going from the latch release assembly (above the license plate) to the latch mechanism. Lift up on the rod, and the hatch will open.
I normally see two different things break. The most common one is for the aforementioned rod to slip off. It's got a ball-and-socket joint that likes to fail. You can pop it back on, and it'll be good for a few more years, or fail next week. Saab sells a replacement that works better.
The other failure is the actual lever that you squeeze to release the trunk. It's a flatish aluminum plate with two little legs pointing up. One of the legs is just a hinge piece, and the other connects to the rod through some levers. The aluminum weakens with salt corrosion, and the leg that actuates the rod breaks. The only solution is to replace the release lever assembly. You can get one at a junkyard, but you had better be sure it doesn't suffer the same corrosion problem. I bought a new one at the dealer (about $75, a while back)
