My mom owns a '99 E320 4-matic, which is essentially rear-wheel drive until all hell breaks loose. It does feel like a very substantial car, and quite light on its feet for its weight. I find it a bit lumbering compared to my '90 9kT (not as crisp or as quick), and I actually feel safer in my 9k because I feel I can control it better. Maybe that's because I drive it all the time and it's a manual instead of an auto (my extreme preference).
I know what you mean though, the E320 is a very safe and stable feeling machine. I see the 9k and 320's "personalities" as very different, and I can't disagree with your general observations.
Have you driven an Aero vs the CSE? I believe the Aero's suspension would be much more what you are looking for. I can't say for sure since I don't have one (for now....).
