As Robert has pointed out, there is a little fan in the dash that pulls in cabin air for the ACC to set the temperature. Look for a little bulls-eye in one of the square buttons.
You shouldn't be able to hear it. But since it's a spinning fan pulling in air, it also pulls in a lot of other things. I've opened them up and found the sensor covered with hair, dust, and other flotsam. My guess is that something got pulled in and is hitting the fan, or the fan itself is dirty. Start by hitting it with some compressed air. I like using the lens cleaning air cans. If that doesn't work, a compressor is OK, just keep the pressure down. DO NOT squirt in any contact cleaner or WD-40. Grease only attracts more dust.
If it becomes very annoying, pop the sensor out (It is very long), and pop the cover off. Clean the sensor of hair and dust bunnies, and give the little motor a squirt of some teflon-based lubricant. Spin the blades to make sure they aren't hitting anything.
