Saab 9000 with Clutch issues

I've recently purchased a 1987 Saab 9000s with 209000km at an auction for a $250 cdn. The car had been reposessed from a garage and had the 5 speed transaxle removed. From my conversation with the tow truck driver and my inspection of the parts it appears that the slave cylinder was not functioning. The clutch and pressure plate appear to be reasonable (though I'm no expert). The starter is missing. My guess is that it will take at least $400 in new and used parts to get the transaxle back on, but I'm trying to determine if its worth the effort.
The body is in fair condition with some rust around the wheel wells. The tires are good. Visually there does not seem to be problems with the engine as there are no serious oil leaks and the oil is fairly clean.
I'd appreciate any suggestions to determine the quality of the engine or any other issues I might face before I go ahead with the transaxle install.
