Hi all,
I'm really perplexed with a cooling system problem. About 3 weeks ago my 97 9000 Aero overheated and blew the heater core. I still am not sure why the car overheated in the first place. It always ran with the gauge between low and middle, never venturing above the middle.
I have since replaced the heater core and blower motor since I was in there (real fun job). I removed the thermostat and did the 'heat the pot of water on the stove test' with the t-stat and it "seemed" to open/close ok visualy. I put everything back together w/o the T-stat just to see if the water pump is pushing water through the system. I filled the system with just water, let it run for a bit and then removed the upper rad hose (one end of this hose connects to the upper rad inlet/outlet and the other end connects to the t-stat assembly). When I held this hose totally vertical, it didn't seem to push/gush the water out...just kinda dribbled out. My father-in-law insists that this means the water pump has failed.
I also ran the car for 1/2 hour or so and although the temp gauge never went beyond 1/2 way, the water in the system appeared to be boiling over. Rad fan came on OK during this test. Also, although I put clean water in the system, I would drain out grey coloured water, which makes me think there is something way more serious wrong, i.e head gasket. By the way, there is no coolant in my oil or oil in my coolant. My spark plugs look OK...burned a white/tan colour on the ceramic.
Can anyone offer any insight...my fayther-in-law wants to rip the water pump out to look at it tomorrow (Saturday). All I want to do at this point is give up and take it in. I have a new baby girl (Oct.26th) and I can only motivate myself to stare at her for hours and hours these days... :-)
Thanks for your help.
