Not too difficult. But there are
two on either side, an inner and an
outer. It's wierd that both sides would
go bad at the same time. If they're bad you need
to know if it's the inners or outers. It's enough work
and expense that you want to make sure first though.
As you might have realized if you followed the long
thread about Aaron's experiences there are a lot of things that
could be causing clicks and clunks. One that didn't
come up there was a bad steering rack.
The cv joints are connected to either end of the
half axle, and enclosed in rubber boot, which looks like
a circular bellows. There's a similar boot on the inside
end of steering linkage leading from the tie rod ends too -
that's not part of the cv assembly.
First look at these boots, one of the most common reasons
cv's go bad is because the boots split and allow road
grim in that erodes them. Check them closely, there should be no
splits and they should be fastened on tightly. If a boot is
split or if there's grease leaking out of it that's a bad sign.
Replacement requires taking off the hubs, disconnecting
the brake calipers, and couple of other things. If you
have a good DIY toolbox you probably have what you need already.
But first check to see if there are any obvious problems
like I mentioned.
If it's clear that some are bad and you want to go for it.
Start a new thread about "how do I change my inner/outer
cv joint" for help. If you are going to work on your own Saab
a repair manual is good thing to own.
