In '92, the crank position sensor was mounted at the pulley, and there was a shutter wheel (a piece of metal with three gaps) bolted to the back of the pulley. In '97, the CPS is in the engine block, and the shutter wheel is inside.
I assume your '92 pulley has a shutter wheel bolted to the back with three screws. If that doesn't mount on the '97 pulley, it won't work. And it's critical that the alignment be correct; the pulley has a key to locate it.
I don't know for a fact that they are or aren't interchangeable, but if the newer one doesn't accept the shutter wheel, you're out of luck.
