Fitting a new relay with a loud click would be the easy way to overcome the problem of not being able to hear the indicators working. However, when I went to my local parts shop they showed me several types of relays all securely packaged. They were prepared to sell me a new relay but would not guarantee that it would make more noise than my current relay (Genuine Saab)
Henry suggested relocating the relay but when I looked into that option it didn't seem practical. The flasher relay plugs directly into the fuse board behind the glove box. It has five or six pins and whilst it would be possible to make a form of extension lead to relocate the relay I decided it would be too much work without any guarantee of success.
I resolved the problem by buying a electronic metronome kit which I had to assemble. The metronome has a provision to vary the frequency of the beat and it's volume. I wired the metronome into the car in the vicinity of the flasher relay using a couple of simple relays.
It works very well and I can now easily hear the sound of my indicators. It took me a couple of hours to complete the job and cost me about $15 US for parts.
