... i am currently using 0w40...
that's right, ZERO W FOURTY oil in my 1990 9000 turbo, and there is no problem...
I'm not too far south of the canadian boarder... and beleive me sometimes here in upstate NY the temp will drop below zero, and cars just don't like to start up in those conditions.
the first number in the weight specs of the oil, is the weight the oil will have when it is near FREEZING tempuratures.
on a normal temp day, the oil WILL NOT reach all the way down to the 5 weight... however if it's like 40-50 it might be a smidgeon thinner i'd think than a full 50 weight...
....which 50 by the way i think is a little thick for a saab engine... to deal with idling and such. how does the car idle with that weight?
the ow40 i've got is used in porsche turbo cars and mercedes straight from the factory, so it's used in some pretty high class turbo and v8 engines...
i don't know about 5w50.... but anyways...
no matter what weight you use... let your car warm up before you drive it... the noise you hear is probably related to oil pressure not being high enough for proper engine operation.
my engine makes tapping noises until it's fully warmed up, meaning the temp gauge has risen above the C on the temp gauge.
however, it made this noise when i was using 10w30 dino oil too...
even in hot climates like florida.
as long as your car doesn't make that noise while you're driving it, i think you are ok.
so... keep that oil till your next change... then try switching to something not as thin, and see if the noise goes away... my guess is that it will not... it's just a characteristic of your engine to make that noise when it is cold...
check out mobile 1 0W40 if you're bored...
