Learned something new today. This may be common knowledge to mechanics. But it is especially valuable when you just did it by yourself. Thought I share with the board.

Wife's 94 cs turbo developed a clunk on the driver side front during turn, high speed or low. I noticed it going to Washing, DC to visit in-laws last week. On a straight away it is just normal and quiet even at 85 mph. I have been busy with the 94 cde conversion so I thought I wait and see how the symptom develops.

Over the weekend I finally have time to remove the drive shaft of the 94 cde to measure its length. The 4 lbs hammer did the job. So I thought why not take the driver side drive shaft and CV joint assembly I removed from the cde to fit on the cs turbo and see what happens. It is simple enough. There is only one 32 mm end nut to tighten to 210 ft-lbs and one boot to clamp.

When I proceeded to loosen the drive side front axle end nut on the 94 cs turbo, to my astonishment it is loose. Well it is loose in the sense that it has not been tightened to 210 ft-lbs. So I foregoed my plan to change the drive shaft but simply tightened it using my 3/4" drive 32 mm socket and went for a test drive. Bingo! That was it. The clunk was gone.

But that's not all. After coming back from the test drive. I don't know where I got the idea. I checked the axle end nut torque again. It was again loose. Apparently with the wheel on the ground the torque setting on the axle nut is not accurate and it has to be tightened and checked again. Make sense to me.

Why the 94cs turbo took nearly three years (since when I bought it) to develop a below spec torque setting is a mystery to me. I can only guess the previous guy who worked on the car tightened it just once.
