Year/transmission? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 15 Nov 2004 08:41:43 In Reply to: Several problems over the weekend, Hdhntr23, Mon, 15 Nov 2004 08:20:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It helps to know the year/transmission/climate control type.
Speedo - could be a problem with the speed pickup. If you have an automatic, open the hood and look down between the firewall and transmission. The speedometer pickup is a metal cylinder sticking straight up with a set of wires coming out. It is just a press fit. Sometimes it backs out a little, sometimes it falls out. I'm not sure where it is on the manual tranny, but I beleive that there is a failure mode where the little internal gear fails. That requires tranny removal.
Headlights - It's common for the headlight relay in the engine-mounted relay box to get flaky. This is due to micro-cracks in the solder pads. They provide both electrical and mechanical mounting for the big relays. You can replace the relay, or if you're handy, pop it open and touch up the big solder pads with a soldering iron.
Heater stuck on high - since you mention a fuse, I assume that you mean the heater FAN is stuck on high. If you have the automatic climate control (ACC), then the problem is a blown transistor. See Quasi's page, specifically
http://www.quasimotors.com/transistor.htm
for more information. If you have a manual controller - a knob - the problem is usually that the fan only works on setting #4. This is due to a blown thermal fuse in the resistor pack inside the fan. It is repairable pretty easily.
If the HEAT is stuck on high, then the problem is related to the mixer arm and/or servo. Let us know more details on the problem (heat or fan?) and more help is available.
As to the remote - do you hear the click when you press the inside button? You should actually hear two clicks, about 1 second apart. The system sends a 1 second pulse to the actuators to lock (or unlock) them. If it's sending the pulse but not making the actuators work, then I'd suspect the actuators are sticky. However, if sometimes they work and sometimes they don't, I'd suspect a poor ground or poor power connection to the central locking box. If it can't supply enough current because of a bad ground, the lock actuators won't work.
