The car won't start and run without this connection. Without the hall-effect sensor, the engine doesn't know it's turning, and there is no way to trigger the coil, so there is no ignition.
All you need is electrical connection, so you could just patch it together with a makeshift connector or just electrical tape. Heck, solder it and cover it with heat-shrink tubing. The only reason there is a connector is to make it easy to replace the distributor; if you don't mind splicing wires, the connector is unnecessary.
Just Note - keep the solder temps down - outside the distributor you should be fine, because it's a long way (mechanically) from the sensor, but don't spend all day heating the contacts. And second - the polarity of the hookup is Critical - don't switch the wires, or it won't work.
