If you ask me now, I'd say don't do it. Although I may change my mind if I complete it sucessfully. There is just TOO MUCH WORK. Remember your labor is free.
Even now I am thinking it is probably cheaper to just drop a drivetrain in. My expenses so far are:
Bought the car for $250, won't start.
Interstat 41R battery: $71, car started and I made the fateful decision to start the project.
sold the automatic transmission: (+)$300
package for auto to 5 speed conversion: $600
turbocharger, plumbing and engine oil cooler lines (recycled): $290
slave cylinder kit: $156
all chain guides, front and rear crank seals, valve cover gasket, etc: ~$250
I hope I haven't missed anytthing. The cost is secondary. But the amount of work is just too much. I did not touch the part in the engine crank case and the valves and springs in the head. Other than that the engine is turned inside out.
I am sure you have better things to do than this. Also if you must, do it in summer when the days are long.
The parts package from Rumrill's gararge is a real bargian in my opinion. John will see you through you needs in the project.
