I would not speculate on the condition of the timing and balance shaft chain parts based only on noise. 142k km on a 9k engine is very young. I have opened up the timing cover of my 94cs at 150k miles, my 94cde at 142k miles and my 94cs turbo at 125k miles. The timing parts and balance shaft chain parts are all pristine. The engine of my 94cde is still on the stand waiting for parts (drive shafts) so I can finish the auto to 5 speed conversion. The engine has significant amount of sludge. Much more than my other two 9k's. But no detectable metal wear.
If you suspect your chains or sprockets are getting worn, you should see evidence in the sum pan. There should be metal shavings. Without it, don't do anything rash.
