Picture doesn't seem to show up for some reason, but anyway, the main advantage of this is that it'll engage all the splines equally, so you can apply uber force to the ring without breaking it.
On my 93 Saab, the ring was really stuck on over 11 years, so it would have been pretty iffy trying to remove it by other means.
The wall thickness of the PVC adapter was reinforced by adding an inner sleeve made from one of these:

4 IN COUPLING HUB x HUB (STYRENE)*45* "B"
UPC 052063404059

It may not have been necessary for the extra sleeve, but I figured overkill would be better, and it works perfectly.

I cut the notches on a table saw, after marking off the 18 notches spaced at 20 degree intervals, assisted by a pie chart drawn on Excel.
