The reason I ask, is that my '87 has never needed a relay changed, which really isn't too surprising, since they are all protected from the elements above the glovebox. And no, you do not need to take the dash top off to get at the relay/fusebox, but you do need to remove the glovebox. The relay might be the same as the '88, or might not be. I personally would suspect not, given the other electrical differences I have found between my car and the '86 or '88, but who knows? I would definitely check the switch first though. Take it out of the steering column and clean all the contacts both inside and out. This is easier than it sounds, and frankly easier than taking out the glovebox, I think.
