My understanding is that inner driver refers to the cup and tripod bearing assembly(but sometimes just the cup) and the carrier bearings support the carrier in the differential. If you're thinking of the bearings that the cup's shaft rides in, they might also be considered carrier bearings, but I don't know. I'm guessing your mechanic was referring to them when he talked about play. I just replaced my cups with better used ones. Tripod bearings were ok. That may not be SOP, but it worked for me.
