Clutch Stuck “In” – Bizarre Slave Failure? oops

Hello All,
I started up my ’86 9kT project car yesterday, and something bizarre happened. I pressed in the clutch, it felt normal, and stated the car. Upon releasing the clutch, it felt very light. With further inspection, I am loosing brake fluid and I hear a “squish” sound near the bellhousing when I push in the clutch. It was dark out so I couldn’t check too thoroughly, but I suspect the slave.
However, the strange thing is, I can put the car in gear with the engine running. Whether the (now soft) clutch is in or not, I can freely move the shifter into any gear (confirmed by looking at the shift rod moving back and forth into the gearbox). Obviously I cannot “release” the clutch and go anywhere though. How can this be? Is there any way for the slave cylinder to fail in the engaged position, or for the clutch to fail “open”? I also hear a light rattling noise coming from the bellhousing with the engine running that could be related.
I am confused by the one, so any help is much appreciated!
Craig
