Just an FYI, I've replaced the ball joints on my 9000 almost every summer. I live in the northeast and pot holes are as common as trees. Well anyway I've been using aftermarket parts, MOOG to be exact and notice that as with most suspension parts they are sealed. Well I cut one open to look at why it failed. Well there is about a thumb size amount of grease inside thats wiped aside from the ball moving in its socket. So basically its bone dry. The bottom half of the ball joint has a soft metal cap sealing the bottom part of the joint. Being and the joints are fairly cheap and one was covered under the manufactures warrenty. I decided to drill a small hole (using a shop vac rigged on the drill press to remove metal pieces during drilling and taping procedure) and put in a grease fitting. Then proceeded to pump the joint full of chassis grease. It worked so far. As far as longevity, time will tell. But I forsee no real detriment to the integrity of the balljoint itself but again this is a test and I don't recommend this to anyone but just if your curious. I've done it to my new ball joints for the my 9-5 and will be istalling them soon.
