There was a posting a long while ago where a member described one of the internal springs on the clutch falling out and becoming stuck in the pressure plate housing, holding the pressure plate open. Another possibility is a broken transmission mainshaft, but that seems kind of remote.
Could some of the pressure plate fingers broken and now the release bearing is jammed in the remaining fingers?
I'm afraid you are at one of those points where the trouble shooting procedure is: "Step 1, remove transmission..."
