Are check valves...a part you don't need?

There have been various posts on this, but I had to bring this up to get some further thinking from you guys. The check valves are supposed to keep fluid in the washer lines so you get fluid right away when you pull the switch, right? Maybe, maybe not.

The Sunday before Thanksgiving I was readying the 9K for a run to Ottawa and Montreal, then VT and back. My windshield washers came up dead. Pump was OK and I got fluid to the headlights, so I check down by the washer tank. Sure enough, the check valve by the washer tank was toast, leaking a bit. The dealer was closed and I was leaving Monday, so I took a plain Y-fitting off the lines on my old C900 and put it in place of the check valve. Refilled the tank and tried the washers. Everything works--headlights and windshield. I let the car sit a while. Try again. Full squirt just as quickly as with a check valve. Next day, enroute to Ottawa I try again. It had been over a day since the last try. Immediate fluid. Same throughout the trip.

And FWIW, last month the check valve coming out of the washer tank for the rear window died. I replaced that with a straight-thru vacuum hose connection I had lying around. And I get instant fluid out back, too. (although there may be a check valve back there--I forget).

Why is it the check valves are supposed to be so important? They are $13 at the dealer, where they insist the valves make a big difference.

Are Saabs the only cars with these check valves?
