I have a '90 turbo 5-speed. It's a great car: the seats are unbelievably comfy, it's quite speedy (although less so than the 2.3L turbos), and is an all-round high quality car.

I have had quite a few problems though, after picking it up at 90k miles. I've had to have a new slave cylinder for the hydraulic clutch, the turbo bypass valve failed (no big deal), the rear shocks went (more on this below), I had to replace some motor mounts, and I've repaired a few minor oil leaks. My biggest scare though is the 5-speed, as the synchros are a bit worn on some gears and it sounds like some bearing are starting to whine.

Quasi's page will give you a great overview. One thing to look out for on the '90 is the potential for the Nivomat (self-leveling) shocks in the rear. Some (all?) of the '90s came with them, and they have soft springs to accompany the self-leveling shocks. If they go, replacement cost on parts alone is around $700! I replaced them with Boges ($100 each) and had used springs from an '89 hatchback put in to replace the soft ones. That has worked well, but it's a bit softer than I'd like.

Anyway, not to scare you off, and a lot of my repairs were probably premature due to heavier wear caused by Alaskan weather. Just to give all the details I can. If you really like speed for cheap, look instead for a '91 or '92 (without TCS!). The '90 is seen as an "odd duck" year, but it's a nice refined car nonetheless.
