Also, the battery light should have come on, since the alternator is not being driven. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to notice the light.
As for driving the car, if it is in fact the serp belt, one mile probably could be ok, but you need to keep your eye on the temp gauge. Don't let it overheat! You could do more damage! Don't use any power accesories, as the only thing powering the car would be the battery. This is all based on whether or not it is the serp belt.
And don't stress out too much, man...there are way worse things in life that can happen!
