When I pulled off the W hose there was plenty of boost, until halfway throught the red it would drop off suddenly---Is that the bypass valve cutting in? I guess this result means the turbo and wastegate are OK.
Next. I changed the NGK plugs, which in 27K miles had opened up to about 1.3MM and had a nice light tan color. That didn't solve the fizzling boost problem. Next, I swapped the DI---Eureka! Now the boost goes to the middle of the red/yellow band and stays there; the acceleration is much better. The old DI, with 163K miles, had not completely failed, but apparently got weak enough to limit the boost. I will keep it as a spare as part of our Saab emergency parts box for long trips in either car. When the Aero's DI failed at only 64K miles just days before the warranty expired, the #2 coil died completely. I disconnected the #2 injector to avoid cooking the cat and drove it to the dealer on 3 cylinders. Thanks for the advice, Areo Guy and James.
