Headlight highbeam gremlin--'93 9000 Aero

Hi Saab friends,
I had a problem recently where my headlights would go off by themselves and the highbeams wouldn't stay on unless you held the stalk back.
I took out the relay and one of the pins was burned so I opened it and replaced some solder that had melted off. That fixed the main problem--my headlights would stay on when they were turned on. However, when you first thurn them on, they are bright, then pulling back on the highbeam switch makes them dimmer(normal lowbeams?). And there is no highbeam indicator on the dash.
Thinking that my home repair job wasn't really right, I then replaced my headlight relay with a new one. I still have the same problem--brights when the car is first started or when the headlights are turned on at the dial switch, and no highbeam indicator light in the dash.
I've found lots of posts on similar issues in the archives and I think the next thing to try is replacing a switch--if this is right, should it be the stalk that controls the highbeams or the dial-type switch that turns the lights on and off?
In the mean time I think I'm going to put back my original "fixed" relay so that whatever electrical malfunction is going on in there will not melt my nice new one....
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks
Annie
