I've had this problem when the battery is getting very old, and the cranking voltage is very low. The little computer in the EDU doesn't start up properly. Usually you can tell the startup voltage from the EDU display, but obviously that's not an option in this case.
If the engine is cranking over fine (turns fast before catching), then it probably isn't a low voltage situation. The problem is most likely the EDU board itself. If you remove the dash top, and lift up (but don't have to remove) the instrument cluster, you can replace the EDU. A used one would be fine.
