as parent of a kid who would like a car but is not likely to get one, that if you are writing the check, you get final say in vehicle selection, probably taking into account cost, insurance, safety, how vehicle will be used, etc., etc.
For a new or inexperienced driver, I think either vehicle is fine--as are many others. 4WD pickups and cars of all makes seem equally erratic in the hands of younger drivers. The biggest downside to pickups IMO, is that they feel fine going fast--until you have to make a sudden maneuver. OTOH, most cars go faster more easily than trucks, so you get in trouble quicker, with less time to react.
Next question: Does your son want a 9-2 or a Tacoma? What else does he like? Will he be the primary driver, or do *you* need a pickup and plan to use his? Or do *you* want a 9-2 and plan to use his?
On the other hand, one of the kids in my daughter's high school has his very own Hummer.
