Easy to replace Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 13 Dec 2004 11:32:30 In Reply to: Re: Motor Mounts - What should I know about them?, sully, Mon, 13 Dec 2004 11:18:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Replacing them isn't a ton of fun, but it's pretty straighforward. Check Quasi's site for instructions -

It doesn't take any really special tools, but jack stands are a must. A floor jack helps.
Some notes-
Quasi says to remove some bolts and drop the sub-frame. Don't be afraid - the engine doesn't fall out. In fact, you need a pry bar to move the bits apart. I like having a few short (6 inch) lenghts of 2x4 to keep the frame bits apart.
The rear mount is pretty easy. Sometimes, and only sometimes, the rear mount gives you trouble because you don't have enough clearance to get it out. Not sure why sometimes it's cake and sometimes it's a turd. Don't sweat it - the rear mount connects to the engine via a bracket. The bracket bolts to the engine with three bolts. If I have trouble with the rear mount, I just undo the bracket.
Doing motor mounts doesn't take a long time, but I find that it's a long job. Huh? Well, you're in there with the fender inner liner off. You're staring straight at the belt side of the engine. I find myself doing the serpentine belt at the same time. and if the belts off, maybe it's time for new idler and tensioner pulleys? I don't like letting them run more than 60-70K. And inspect that harmonic balancer. And if the harmonic balancer needs replacement, might as well do the main seal. And spin the alternator, PS, and water pump pulleys to see how the bearings are. And that alternator - has the charging voltage been a bit low lately, and maybe it's time for a new Voltage Regulator? Not that hard with the belts off.
If the upper torsion bar bushings are shot, you should replace them, too. One bushing is in the 'dogbone' and the dogbone comes right out. The other bushing is part of a bracket that bolts to the engine. You can buy a tool to remove and reset the bushings. I've had mixed luck with the tool - I get the old bushings out OK, but getting them back in had been trouble. One method is to take the dogbone, bracket, and new bushings to a machine shop, and let them press the old ones out, and new ones in. Cake. Oh, yeah - the engine mounted bracket is, well, mounted to the engine. If you have the fender inner liner out, getting that bracket out isn't too hard. Loosen the lower alternator bolt. Remove the upper alternator bolt, and lever the alternator back from the engine. You now have access to the four bolts holding the upper bushing mount bracket to the engine.
So doing the mounts is pretty easy - it's just that I end up doing about 6 other necessary maintenance items at the same time.
