I've replaced the VR 2 times in 10 months. It's a NAPA brand part. The first one was replaced due to a severe voltage spike [18-20 volts reading] when the VR failed, burning out some electricals. I replaced the VR and some bulbs. It was fine for 5-6 months then it started to drop in voltage readings. Upon inspection of the VR, the brushes were good but one of the wires became disconnected at the solder point. I got another one, same brand but this one looked to be of better quality and had slight differences in the overall look. I installed it and had 4 months with no problems. I by chance noticed yesterday when shifting that the volts went down to 12.6 between shifting then right back up to 13.8 on acceleration. After that I watched it and it did the same thing nearly every time and when it dropped to 12.0 a few times the battery light flickered, but it always came right back up to normal. I think I should replace the whole alternator as it seems to be eating up VR's. It's hard to see inside the alternator without removing it but what I could see, when replacing the VR, looked fine.
