All 9000 and most 900 DIs are the same. Almost Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: DI Cassette, Aussie Pete, Tue, 14 Dec 2004 11:57:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
All the 9000 DI's are red. All the red DIs are pretty much the same. What's the difference? In early cars, the cable for the DI was part of the cassette itself - a 'pigtail'. This cable plugged into two connectors by the throttle plate.
In later cars, the DI had a connector on it, no cable. There is a cable from the DI cassette to the connectors by the throttle plate.
So if you have an older DI, with an intergral cable, when you get a newer DI with a connector, you need to buy an adapter cable.
Other than that, all red DIs are pretty much the same. Older DI's had removable coils, which were made non-removable later because the removable ones were a minor reliability issue.
There are minimal differences between the red DIs.
Trionic 7 went to a Black DI, That has slightly different characteristics. According to John Moss (Saab Technical Training Guru), you can run a black DI on a red car, and vice-versa. HOWEVER, operation is not guaranteed. His thought was that it was acceptable to limp a car home. You may or may not sprout Check Engine Lights. It's more likely that you can run a black successfully on a red car. But ideally, this is one place where segregation is a good idea - stick with red DIs.
Now, to complicate matters, sometimes you'll find a Blue DI. These usually also have an extra hole in the top plate. These are 'test' DIs made available to dealers. The thought is that the Blue DI's are DIs that were returned to Saab under warranty, and subsequently tested good. Saab painted them Blue, drilled an extra hole in the plate so that they would hang nicely from a hook in the shop, and sold them to dealers for much less than the cost of a new DI. Many of the blue test DI's made it out into the general population.
