Yes, the switches do light up. Or are supposed to, anyway.
In the early cars, each switch had it's own light bulb. To replace the bulb, you pop out the switch panel. You can then pop out each switch, and you need to open up the switch, unsolder the old bulb, and solder in the new one. Dissassembling the switch usually results in a few springs going flying. It's a good time to clean the switch contacts when you put it back together. For bulbs, I go to Radio Shack, and buy 12 volt, 60ma, minature wire-lead bulbs. They come two to a package.
In later years, and I believe '92 is late enough, there is one bulb for the entire switchpack. Again, pop out the switchpack. There is one bulb in the back, removed by turning it 1/4 turn. It's actually a bulb in a plastic carrier. You can buy the bulb and carrier at the dealer. Or, you can buy one of those two-pack bulbs from RS, and unsolder the old bulb from the plastic carrier, and solder in a new one. Use a low-wattage iron, otherwise you'll melt the plastic carrier.
In the case of the single bulb, the 12v 60 ma is a little dim - the dealer one is probably brighter.
