I have a puzzle and would love to get the views of the experts on this board. First, a little history. This past September, I purchased a '97 CSE. The car is generally great, but I knew when I bought it that it had a number of "issues", including a small amount of blue smoke occasionally on start-up when it is cold and (after a couple of months of ownership) a nearly dead battery. So two weeks ago (after reading some posts on this board) I changed the oil to a heavier weight, and changed the battery at the same time.

The heavier oil seems to have helped with the blue smoke. But on a couple of cold mornings this week (below 20F) the car has cranked so slowly on start-up that I thought it wouldn't catch -- except that it did, at the last second. These mornings the voltage display showed 8.2 or 8.4 rather than the 9.6 or so that it had been showing before then.

I took the car to my mechanic, who I've dealt with for years and trust. They checked the battery and found it fine (did a specific gravity test), checked for current drains (nothing), and checked the charging system(fine). Their guess at the moment is that the heavier oil is causing the car to crank really slowly. Can this really be the right explanation? If it is, do you think I should switch back to lighter oil? Or shall I find a way of keeping the engine warm overnight (utility light under hood)? I'm pretty sure if the temp drops another 5F the car won't start unless I do something.
