Before I sold my 91 I had a similar problem. I found that I could modulate the gas and get better boost than ever. It only did this intermittently combined with a rough idle and a couple of stalls. Turned out to be the DI. After I put in a new DI it ran perfectly again, boosted to the hash marks.
By the way, if you haven't spent the 350$ and bought the Swedish Dynamics E-prom for that car, I would highly recommend it. Performance goes off the chart, it was quicker than my Viggen and my Aero and very reliable, I put over 50K miles on it before I sold it and never had a problem. If you like your 91 now, you'll adore it after you get the chip. It's the best sleeper out there. It'll run 240 hp and 280 lb-ft with no other mods. I still miss that car. I intend to upgrade my aero in a similar fashion.
