CEL diagnosis on a APC system (long)

I've had a hard time finding any info on the old posts, and I've done quite a bit of searching. The problem is a 5-flash CEL on my '90 9kT (manual, 109k). Trionic info seems much more prevalent than for my APC system on the BB. Any idea what 5 flashes means? No? Please read on.....
I've run through all the routine maintenance one would usually suggest (filters, regular checks, etc.) and just recently put in a new O2 sensor (spliced a universal), and no change. So here's what happens, maybe someone can recognize by description:
Winter in Alaska, so the starts are fairly cold. Driving along and the engine comes close to operating temp. When I do get the CEL, it comes on right as the coolant temp is coming up to t-stat opening conditions. After about 30 - 90 seconds, the CEL will almost invariably go out.
This had me thinking O2 sensor, because that seems like the transition from open loop to closed loop where the sensor starts playing a role. But my new O2 sensor didn't change anything. Perhaps I spliced it poorly?!? But then it would register a CEL all the time when in closed loop, right?
Despite all this, the car is running great, from idle to full throttle. Plugs looked fine at the last regapping too.
If someone can solve this, I'll give you a screaming deal on a used BPC! :)
