Interesting they actually intended it to be like that- guess it's one of the Saab quirks. Never seen that in any other makes; the general practice is to go to the stop on the right and then forward, not this rather odd "go about half way, give or take, and then forward to 5th."
I suppose it might help drivers maintain a slower, more deliberate pace for shifting that would make things last longer. It's not a problem with granny style shifting, but in more spirited shift speeds, it does make for a few retries if you don't hit it just so. Maybe the idea is that you only need 5th if you're cruising along slowly, savin' gas... or if the yellow blinky shift light comes on.
Actually, it could be more acceptable for it to be set up that way if there were some spring stop to be overcome, such as before going into reverse, but there isn't any discernible point like that when going to 5th. That may be the problem on mine. Maybe a spring fell off somewhere.
